The Koderma Wildlife Sanctuary

The Koderma Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the Chhotanagpur plateau of Jharkhand surrounded by forest area of Koderma districts, Jharkhand and Nawada district of Bihar.

It was notified as Koderma wildlife sanctuary by the Govt. of Bihar under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in 1985.

This sanctuarie is residence of Sloth bear, Indian Leopard and many colourful birds and spread over 150 square Kilometer of Area. It is having famous Dhwjadhari Temple.

Approach and Access

The sanctuary is situated on Patna Ranchi Road (National Highway-31) and approximately in the middle of Patna and Ranchi. The nearest railway station is Koderma, which is 10 km away from the entrance of Koderma wildlife sanctuary. This station has good connectivity with the other cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Puri, Ranchi, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Gaya, Banaras, etc. The nearest airport is Ranchi [175 km away from the office of Koderma wildlife range].

Koderma wildlife sanctuary has a wide range of biodiversity. Vulture, Jungle cat, Hyena (Hyena hyena Hindi-Lakarbagha), Common mongoose, Sloth Bear, Barking Deer, Blue Bull, Sambhar, Spotted Deer, Elephant, Indian wild Boar, Jackal, Amphanibis (Frog), Fishes and reptiles (Lizard, Python, Cobra, Karait, etc.) are present in good numbers in the sanctuary area.
