Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary

Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located 10 km from the city of Jamshedpur in the state of Jharkhand. Inaugurated in 1975 it contains significant population of Indian Elephants


Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is situated around the Dalma Hills. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is a much larger area starting from Chandil to 40 km east. The sanctuary covers around 195 km2.


It is about 100 km from the capital city Ranchi, and 15 km from the steel city Jamshedpur. The wildlife sanctuary runs parallel to the NH-18 with hills as high as 915 m from sea level. Dalma Sanctuary is spread over 193 km2 of forests of East Singhbhum and Saraikela-kharsawan districts of the state of Jharkhand. The forests of Dalma come under the category "Dry peninsular Sal" and "Northern Dry Mixed Deciduous Forest". Most part of Dalma forests shed leaves in the summer and attains its full bloom at the onset of monsoon.

Our Attraction

The sanctuary is a natural abode of wild elephants .The sanctuary possesses various water streams, holes hence in the pinch period(summer season)herds of wild elephants can be seen roaming around the water holes.Summer season is the best time to spot a wild elephant in the sanctuary. Besides the wild elephants the sanctuary is a home to many rare wildlife species like pangolin,sloth bear,Indian grey wolf,Wild dog etc.

Commonly seen wildlife in Dalma wildlife Sanctuary- The giant squirrels are abundant in the sanctuary. One can find them easily on the way to Dalma top feeding on/ munching on the fruits of Kushum, Asan and Bel Tree. Well Knitted network of many woody climbers serve as a pathway for them. Peacocks and Monkeys are very common in the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary also harbours significant population of reptiles and snakes like Bamboo pit Viper and copper headed trinket snakes are found here. The Sanctuary has very rich bird diversity, birds like crested serpent Eagle, plum headed parakeets, paradise flycatchers can be easily spotted by the visitors. The sanctuary has considerable sloth bear population.

The Dalma wildlife sanctuary is situated on the Chhotanagpur plateau of Jharkhand state near the famous steel city of Jamshedpur. The sanctuary spreads over East Singhbhum and Saraikela-Kharshanwa districts. Sanctuary area lies between Latitudes 22deg. 46' 30" N and 22deg. 57' N Longitudes 86deg. 3' 15" E and 86deg. 26'30" E Its eastern limit extends up to the border of Purulia district of west Bengal. The entire Forests of Dalma Sanctuary falls in the catchment of Subarnarekha River and Dimna Lake of Jamshedpur.

History, Mission & Vision

OUR Histroy

Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary' is named after the 'Dalma Mai' a local goddess, who is very popular among local people. It is situated around 'Dalma hills' of East Singhbhum District. Dalma hill top with Mandir and cave has religious significance for local people. At Dalma hill top a festival is organized in the month of 'Asarh' every year in which a large number of local people gather to pay homage to Goddess 'Dalma Mai' supposed to be a tribal girl who entered inside the cave to meet sacred pilgrims and never returned from the cave. The descendants of Dalma Mai's family from village Bonta especially come to worship at the site.

The main vision of the sanctuary is “ Conservation of Bio-diversity in Dalma Landscape with focus on viable wildlife and livelihood security” and also to cater sustained social, economic and environmental benefits to the inhabitants of the at joining villages of Dalma wildlife sanctuary and to develop a economically, ecologically viable eco Tourism activities for tourists involving the villages.
